Lake Manyara packs remarkable diversity into a small area. From groundwater forest fed by springs to open grassland, acacia woodland and the alkaline lake itself, the park supports elephants, hippos, giraffes and an astonishing variety of birds, including flamingos that turn the shallows pink. Its most famous residents are the tree-climbing lions, often seen draped over acacia branches — unusual behaviour found in only a few places in Africa. Manyara is typically visited as a half- or full-day stop on the northern circuit.
