Formerly part of the Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park is the largest national park in Africa. The Rufiji River and its maze of channels and lakes form the park's lifeblood, supporting huge populations of hippo, crocodile and elephant, and one of Africa's last strongholds of the endangered African wild dog. Nyerere offers a different safari rhythm to the north: boat safaris, walking safaris and a genuine sense of wilderness with very few vehicles. It is reached by road or a short flight from Dar es Salaam.
