Tarangire is the elephant capital of the north. Centred on the life-giving Tarangire River, the park draws huge concentrations of elephant, buffalo, zebra and wildebeest in the dry season, when the river is the only reliable water for miles. Its landscape of ancient baobabs and golden grassland is among the most photogenic in Tanzania. Often overlooked in favour of the Serengeti, Tarangire rewards visitors with excellent big-cat sightings, over 550 bird species, and far fewer vehicles. It makes an ideal first or last stop on a northern circuit safari.
