Kilimanjaro National Park protects Africa's rooftop — a dormant volcano rising in isolation from the plains to a snow-capped 5,895 m summit, Uhuru Peak. The mountain passes through five climate zones, from cultivated farmland and rainforest to alpine desert and arctic glaciers, making the climb feel like walking from the equator to the Arctic in a week. Thousands of trekkers attempt the summit each year via routes such as Machame, Lemosho, Marangu, Rongai and the Northern Circuit. No technical climbing is required, but altitude makes it a serious undertaking best done with experienced guides and proper acclimatisation.
